President (as of the upload date of this page) Andy Heins of the National Waco Club sent the images at right. Andy  runs the day to day business of the Club, and we should all thank him for the effort he expends to help us understand better the Waco aircraft that were signed so long ago in the Registers of Delta Mike Airfield, Inc.

WACO RNF NC111Y

NC111Y (S/N 3299) was signed once in the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) Register, Thursday, May 14, 1931 at 3:50PM. The unidentified pilot carried one unidentified passenger to and from unidentified locations. All we have from the Register about this airplane was its presence. Below, courtesy of Andy Heins (left sidebar) are three photographs of the airplane through the years. None of the photos were dated (but see below), so the rank below is not indicative of increasing age. Note, however, subtle differences in the engine and engine cowl structures. Locations were unidentified.

Below, the airplane is being fueled by an unidentified person. Note the fuel nozzle in his hands with the hose leading into an underground tank via an open trap door. Commonly called a fuel bowser, the word became a generic term for fuel dispensers and water carriers, including wheeled tank trucks.

This photograph shows a different paint scheme. Upon magnification and contrast adjustment, the registration number is visible under the bottom port wing on all these photos.

The manufacturer's specifications as it came from the factory on July 24, 1930 are below, courtesy of Andy Heins. Other than engine and propeller serial numbers, and paint scheme, there is not much information on this page.

The second page of specifications is below and provides some details on the chain of custody. I could find no information on "Minor & Murchie" in Burbank, CA. They might have been an aircraft distributor. Regardless, the airplane remained based on the west coast, especially Long Beach, for all its life.

Notice in the right-hand column the notation "One warner ring cowl-vermillion shipped 1/22/33." From this information we can guess that the first image of the airplane exhibited above was snapped before January 22, 1931, and the following two were snapped after that date. With eleven owners between 1930 and 1945, it changed hands frequently, on the order of about 1.5 years per owner.

NC111Y also appeared twice flown by two different pilots in the Parks Airport Register during 1930 and 1931. Today registration 111Y is assigned to a Cessna 680 in Nashville, TN. If you have additional information about NC111Y, please let me KNOW.
