WACO MNF NC11239

Waco MNF NC11239 (S/N 3445) was manufactured April 17, 1931 by the Waco AIrcraft Company, Troy, OH. It was recorded in the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) Register on July 6, 1931 at 2:47PM. The tower Operator left us no information regarding the pilot's name, passenger name, or locations of home base or destination. Below, courtesy of Andy Heins (left sidebar) is an undated photograph of NC11239.

There are three people in this photograph. The man in the leather jacket standing near the starboard elevator, the person standing aft of the port wing whose legs and feet are visible under the airplane, and a person in a long, dark coat with full sleeves standing behind the gentleman in the leather jacket. Upon magnification, I cannot see the face of that individual. The man in the leather jacket is wearing a military service cap. Another undated photograph of NC11239 aloft is below.

Below are the Manufacturing Specifications for NC11239 at the time of manufacture, April 17, 1931. It had a Menasco Pirate C4, inline engine installed, which was unusual. Most Wacos left the factory with radial engines. It was equipped with basic cockpit instruments. It was painted with vermilion and silver, a common factory color scheme.

Only four model MNFs were constructed. Al Menasco used the MNF to help promote his engines. Menasco engines, as well as the C-4 model, are popular on the Web. On NC11239, a Heywood air-operated starter, caster action tail wheel, compass, navigation lights, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher were standard equipment. NC11213 had the optional, Hamilton Standard ground adjustable prop. Brakes were optional.

NC11239 was transferred to Roy T. Minor in Burbank, CA on April 22, 1931. Minor was a broker for Waco aircraft, and transferred the airplane immediately to A.E. Cameron of Los Angeles, CA. It went through three more owners up until the eve of WWII. A communication by the Civil Aeronautics Authority on March 10, 1947 was unanswered.
