This Travel Air D-4000 is S/N 379, manufactured February 25, 1928. It was the so-called "Speedwing" model. It was purchased new and use first by Howard Hawks, a Hollywood movie director. It wore the "NX" registration when owned by Hawks, as in the photograph at right.

In November, 1928 it was purchased and flown by Florence Lowe "Pancho" Barnes. She used it for "photography and motion picture work." All totaled through the years, NC4419 changed hands 23 times, including nine times during the years of WWII.

NC4419 landed three times at Glendale during December, 1930. It was probably flown by Barnes on two of those occasions. The airplane also landed at Clover Field three times, and it is signed in the Davis-Monthan Airfield Register three times. The technography for NC4419 is online at the Davis-Monthan Register Web site at the link. NC4419 had a varied history and it is still registered with the FAA today. It is now in a restoration shop in Georgia. Photograph, right, courtesy of Barnstormer's Workshop.
