STEARMAN MODEL 4C (LATER 4E) NC667K

NC667K was signed in the Glendale Register three times during April-May, 1931. Although the pilot was not identified, chances are good he was Dudley Steele. NC667K was manufactured October 28, 1929. It was owned and operated by the Richfield Oil Company, with Steele as the head of the aeronautical division for the company.

The airplane also landed three times at the Davis-Monthan Airfield, twice at Clover Field, and once at Parks Field. Steele traveled widely representing the company. The technography for the airplane is on the Davis-Monthan Register Web site at the link.

There are many things at the technography link that you will want to see. One is a photograph of Dudley Steele standing in front of 667K with Charles Lindbergh. The photograph is similar to the one at left from the Van Nuys (CA) News of Friday, April 25, 1930. This news article, and the one below, date the photographs very accurately.

Lindbergh had just completed a coast-to-coast speed flight in a Lockheed aircraft on April 20, 1930. He was accompanied by the expecting Ann Morrow Lindbergh who served as copilot/navigator, even though she was about seven months pregnant with their first child.

The gasoline the Lindberghs used was Richfield's product. The photographs in this and the article at right from the Berkeley (CA) Daily Gazette of April 26, 1930 are publicity shots celebrating the event, which is described in the brief text. Their speed record was soon eclipsed by other fliers, among them Jimmy Doolittle.

One gratifying thing about NC667K airplane is that it is still flying today. It was restored recently by owner Sarah Wilson and its first flight happened on August 29, 2012. A video of the first takeoff is at the link.

I visited with NC667K and owner Wilson on April 10, 2013 at Lakeland, FL. The color photo below is how the airplane looked on that day. Wilson offers rides in her airplane.

The restoration is immaculate and the details of finish and livery may be viewed in detail in other photographs at the Davis-Monthan Register page for the airplane that I linked above.

As Webmaster for this and the other sites comprising the Delta Mike Airfield, Inc. suite of sites, it has been a privilege to follow a Register airplane through the long, 82-year time from 1929, when we see it with Steele and Lindbergh, above, to 2013 when it soars over Florida.

If you have photographs or information about NC667K that you would like to share, please let me KNOW.
