EARL POPULAIRE NX138W

NX138W landed at least eighteen times at the Grand Central Air Terminal (GCAT) between December 23, 1930 and May 6, 1931. As with many of the landings at GCAT, the tower Operator did not record the pilot's name. Neither was the home base or destination for any of the landings cited. The airplane owner was entered as "Earl Aviation Corporation."

Below, a profile of NX138W courtesy of Guest Editor Mike Gerow. The location is Long Beach, CA. The photograph was taken by his father, Russell T. Gerow, in 1930. Please direct your browser to R.T. Gerow's link to view some of his other photographs.

Earl Populaire NX138W is S/N 103, manufactured May 15, 1930 as one of only a few of the type. It was a two-place, land biplane that left the factory with a 95HP Cirrus engine installed. I have also seen the spelling as "Populair," but Populaire seems to be the most frequent.

Regardless, the good news about 138W is that it is still registered with the FAA and is owned since March, 2006 by a gentleman in Sonoma, CA. I am not sure of its airworthiness status, but it its engine is listed by the FAA as a 125HP Warner Scarab. Below, another 1930 photograph of 138W with R.T. Gerow at Long Beach, CA.

Compared to some Register aircraft, NX138W has had surprisingly few owners. Including the present owner, there were only four others going back to when it was new in 1930. The 95HP Cirrus engine was replaced with the Warner Scarab in 1933, the same year it was sold by the Earl Aviation Corporation to its next owner, Hubert Harlan. Harlan sold it to Elizabeth Cooper in 1935, who sold it back to Harlan in 1939. Harlan then owned it through 1982 when he sold it to Floyd Orr, and Orr to its present owner in 2006.

NX138W also landed once at Clover Field, Santa Monica, CA. If you have further information or photographs of NX138W, please let me KNOW.
